Robin Lee Graham sailed solo around the world at age 16 leaving from Los Angeles in a 24' fiberglass day sailor.  It was 1965.
National Geographic followed his voyage.  He landed in Los Angeles in 1970, 5 years older with a wife and a baby on the way.

PLASTIC SOUP is not my favorite food.

California is the first state to BAN plastic shopping bags. In a 41-27 vote, the Assembly on Wednesday passed a bill that would prohibit grocery stores from offering plastic bags 
starting January 2012.

• A "plastic soup" of waste floating in the Pacific Ocean is growing at an alarming rate and now covers an area bigger than Texas, scientists have said.
• Some plastics in the Gyre will not break down in the lifetimes of the grandchildren of the people who threw it away.
• Any animal eating these pieces of plastic debris will also be taking in highly toxic pollutants.  Then we eat the animal.
